What is propolis?

What is propolis?

Propolis is a complex made by bees from resinous substances with multiple therapeutic properties. It is collected mainly from conifers (birch, fir, poplar, etc.). This mixture is brought by the bees to the hive, being transported in the pollen “baskets” which are also used for the transport of propolis at their third pair of legs. Then the bees line the hive with propolis, creating an unfavorable environment for the development of bacteria. Propolis is the natural antiseptic of the hive.

When an intruder enters the hive, he is immediately immobilized and killed by the sentinel bees who scent him with propolis so that he decays in his propolis sarcophagus without contaminating the tenants of the hive. We also find Propolis in the alveoli containing the eggs, creating a sterile environment for the good development of future bees.

Depending on the species of bees and the size of the colony, a hive can produce between 0.1 and 1 kg of Propolis per year.

What is its composition?

Propolis composition is very complex. It consists mainly of resins (flavonoids, phenolic acids, esters), beeswax, fatty acid, volatile essential oils and pollen. It is very variable in its consistency from one geographical region to another because it is the buds of the foraged trees which determine the constitution of propolis. Depending on the temperature, propolis has a different consistency, it is very sticky and elastic when the outside temperature is high and hardens when the outside temperature is colder.

Propolis has always been used by humans

Propolis was already used by the Egyptians for ointments and mummification rituals. During Antiquity, it was specifically appreciated for its antiseptic and healing properties, it was entirely part of the emergency pharmacy of the time and even in the Middle Ages where it was used to heal wounds. In the past two centuries, Propolis has been replaced by medication despite all the benefits it can have.
